In the field of laser-based Additive Manufacturing SLM (Selective Laser Melting) and LMD (Laser Metal Deposition) are two established technologies. Both technologies are suitable for building up parts made of nickel-based alloys, such as Inconel 718 [1,2]. SLM and LMD differ regarding the way of applying the powder to the process. The distinct characteristics and inherent process conditions of SLM and LMD lead to different degrees of detail and achievable geometrical properties of the manufactured parts.
Within the framework of the Cluster of Innovation “AdaM”, an analysis of both technologies concerning their capability to build up near-net-shaped parts is performed. In this paper the results of a first investigation of dimensional accuracy and surface quality of test samples built up by SLM and LMD is presented.
