Laser welding of aluminum by superposition of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser with a continuous wave diode laser in order to improve the weldability of aluminum has been investigated. The configuration allows to enhance the absorption of the Nd:YAG welding laser due to preheating by the diode laser. Thus, the process efficiency as well as the weld quality increases. Further, the resulting time-temperature-cycle can be influenced by the combination of two laser beams, so that the formation of pores and cracks can be significantly suppressed. The results show, that it is possible to avoid weld defects, like solidification cracks during pulsed laser beam welding by superposing a continuous wave diode laser.
