Growth of chromium oxide layer on the surface of stainless steel and titanium oxide on titanium are shown to lead to color formation of the surface. This growth is demonstrated using a MOPA fiber laser by control of power delivery to the surface or pulse overlap. Color change of the surface is also shown linked to its chemical composition of the surface or th thickness of the oxide layer.
