Hybrid laser cladding processes have been studied extensively in Finnish national industrial scientific project during the past two years. As a part of study well-controllable heat energy induced by magnetic field was utilized to overcome the commonly known problems related to laser cladding. Productivity (kg/h) and energy efficiency was significantly improved by heating the smallish substrate before and during the cladding. Induction assisted laser cladding experiments were also conducted on massive hardenable steel block in order to prevent the formation of cracks in heat-affected zone by local heating. Finally, the possibility to use induction in heating the strip consumable before entering the laser generated melt pool was tested.
