To accelerate the bone growth around a metallic implant, a layer of bioceramic HA is coated on Ti6Al4V substrate using plasma-spraying technique. To improve the interfacial adherence between the HA coating and Ti6Al4V substrate, a scaffold TiN layer was produced on the surface of Ti6Al4V plate using laser gas nitriding technique. The experimental results showed that the 3-D TiN dendritic scaffold structure could help anchor the HA coating and improve the interfacial adherence significantly as compared with those on the grit blasted and polished surfaces.
