Laser cladding has been successfully utilized on number of base materials. There is, however, little data and knowledge available for cladding on cast iron substrates. Cast irons are difficult substrate materials for all welding processes due to its brittle microstructure. Laser cladding can help to solve the cracking problem induced by high heat input of other welding processes. There is still a great tendency for pore formations due to combustion of graphite. This study presents results of cladding experiments on various cast iron grades and cladding materials.
