Weight and cost reduction programs in aircraft industry imply the development of new joining techniques such as laser welding. But hot tearing is a phenomenon often present in the case of laser welding of aluminium – magnesium – silicon alloys. The interest of using laser beams in welding processes is the speeds that can be reached. However, due to the high cooling rates that characterise laser – material interaction, the welding speed becomes itself a source for hot cracking. To eliminate this inconvenience, a consequent study concerning the most important parameters that act on the hot cracking presence or absence, is presented in this paper.
