High Power Diode laser welding is a relatively new technique, which in comparison to Nd:YAG laser welding can give higher quality cosmetic welds. At present little is known concerning the response of materials to parametric variations during high power diode laser (HPDL) welding. This paper explores the performance of such a laser and describes the inter-relationships between operating parameters and output response for welds made on AISI316L and AA2024 aluminium. The research includes a comparison between a fibre coupled and a direct diode laser beam. During the experiments one of the main goals was to examine the influence of different shielding gasses, gas flow rates, welding angles and focus positions.
