Thin films and particles of diamond-like carbon (DLC) having mixed sp2/sp3 hybridized bonding can be deposited using excimer laser ablation of graphite. These materials exhibit ultraviolet (UV) spectral characteristics that can be adjusted by varying deposition conditions. We discuss the preparation of these materials and examine the relation between composition and spectral absorption in the vicinity of the π → π* transition of aromatic carbon groups in DLC films.
