Hydroxyapatite (HAP) coating on Ti-alloy substrate produced by laser cladding process was an acceptable consideration to improve the joint character between Ti-alloy biomaterial and natural bone. The current technique showed the problem of cracking when single HAP powder was used. Adding zirconia as a reinforcing agent to HAP was adopted as a possible solution for this problem. The microstructure and phase composition of the formed coating were characterized with SEM, TEM and X-ray diffraction. The zirconia exhibited distinct effects on reinforcing coating and preventing cracking. As a result, a well uniform, crack-free coating of HAP/ZrO2 composites was formed on Ti-alloy substrate by laser cladding.
