Laser based tile grout removal may have the potential to overcome the problems in the existing mechanical techniques which would cause damages to the tiles and create dusts and noises. It would also improve the performance and quality of the work. Following the previous work by the authors on the feasibility and characteristics of a high power diode laser (HPDL)-based grout removal process, this paper reports further investigations on the effects of the process involving water-film, anti-reflection carbon coating and multi-scanning. The work includes various scientific analyses of basic phenomena and mechanisms involved and describes the results obtained in such studies. Discussions are made on main scientific issues that would lead to a development of a safe and optimum performance in such a process.
