This paper looks at the process and effectiveness of laser direct treatment of polymer surfaces for selective plating of copper. The work covered includes the use of the 2nd and 3rd harmonic Nd:YAG lasers and the KrF excimer laser on various polymers. Analyses of the laser treated surfaces are also presented. Based on the results, a discussion is provided of possible mechanisms by which the selective plating results; roughening of the surface and the formation of graphite or other substances.
