The improved laser performance of high power diode lasers (HPDL’s) in regard to output power and beam quality broadens the existing applications and opens entirely new fields of practice. This paper will describe the enhancements achieved in industrial HPDL’s and will present the latest results achieved in materials processing with these systems. The focus will be on joining applications of coated steel, lightweight alloys, and metal foams with up to 4 kW laser power.
