Laser induced surface alloying of hard particles, such as carbides, nitrides, and borides, offers significant benefits for improving the wear resistance of ferrous alloys. However, dissolution of these particles within the laser pool negate the ability to impart high wear resistance, while in certain instances produce brittle microstructures that may be sensitive to cracking upon cooling. The ability to retain selective hard particles within the melt pool is examined based on thermodynamic and kinetics analysis. Specifically, the application of a recently developed model that couples thermodynamic and kinetic considerations for describing particle stability under isokinetic conditions is discussed.
