Direct Simulation Monte Carlo — The Legacy of Graeme A. Bird

Since its introduction, Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) has revolutionized the field of rarefied gas dynamics. Physics of Fluids has played major role in the advancement of DSMC, with the first paper on the topic, by Professor Graeme A. Bird, publishing in Physics of Fluids in 1963 (https://doi.org/10.1063/1.1710976). This Special Topic Collection is dedicated to the memory of Professor Bird with the aim to elucidate the past and illuminate the future of DSMC.
