Depletion Forces and Asakura-Oosawa Theory
The seminal paper on depletion forces by Sho Asakura and Fumio Oosawa appeared as a 500 word Letter to the Editor in JCP in 1954 (1). An excellent Perspective article on the topic, by Kurt Binder, Peter Virnau and Antonia Statt, was published in JCP in 2014 on the 60th anniversary of the original work (2). JCP has played a critical role in the birth, development, and broad application of work based on this "fifth force of nature." The proposed Special Issue will include papers exploring experimental and theoretical developments as well as diverse applications of depletion forces in a variety of fields including (bio)macromolecules, colloids, polymers, gels, and glasses.
