Hybrid Integration beyond Silicon Photonics
In this special collection on Hybrid Integration beyond Silicon Photonics, we address the recent progress, current challenges and future opportunities of photonic hybrid integration. This special issue specifically explores the capabilities of traditional and emerging industrial integrated photonic platforms, particularly silicon photonics and the enhancement of these platforms with the addition of more exotic materials to achieve functionalities not possible in the native platform. This special issue aims to span the full spectrum of hybrid integration topics ranging from the maturing fields of III-V active optical materials on silicon photonics right through to novel emerging 2D materials promising unprecedented functionalities. Advanced integration approaches for electronic and photonics integrated circuits are also covered. Contributions spanning frontier science and academic advancements through to technological developments and industrial applications were welcomed.
