Reusing AVS Content

Permission from AVS is required to:

• Republish content (excerpts, figures, tables) if you are not the original author
• Modify, adapt, or redraw materials for another publication
• Systematically reproduce content
• Store or distribute content electronically
• Copy content for promotional purposes

To request permission to reuse AVS content, use RightsLink for the quickest response. To use RightsLink, use Scitation to access the article you wish to license, and click on the Reprints and Permissions link under the TOOLS tab.

You may also contact AVS directly at [email protected]. When doing so, please include the following information in your request:

• Citation information for the article containing the material you wish to reuse
• A description of the material you wish to reuse, including figure and/or table numbers
• The title, authors, name of the publisher, and expected publication date of the new work
• The format(s) the new work will appear in (e.g., print, electronic, CD-ROM)
• How the new work will be distributed and whether it will be offered for sale

Authors do not need permission from AVS to:

• Quote a publication (include the material in quotation marks and provide reference to the material)
• Reuse any materials licensed under a Creative Commons CC BY license
  • Please format the credit line: “Reproduced from [FULL CITATION]; licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license.”
• Reuse your own AVS article in your thesis or dissertation
  • Please format the credit line: “Reproduced from [FULL CITATION] with permission from the American Vacuum Society (AVS).”
• Reuse portions of your own AVS article (excerpts, figures, tables) in another publication
  • Please format the credit line: “Reproduced from [FULL CITATION] with permission from the American Vacuum Society (AVS).”

A FULL CITATION would appear as: Journal abbreviation, volume number, article ID number or page number (year). For example: J. Vac. Sci. Technol. A 32, 061203 (2014).

Reusing Content Published by Others

We require documented permission (or proof that no permission is needed) to be obtained for all reused content.

Many publishers use RightsLink or other online services to handle permissions requests. Access the article or material you wish to license and look for a link such as “Reprints and Permissions” to request permission.

It is the authors’ responsibility to indicate when material has been reused and to obtain permission for and properly acknowledge that reuse. Please check with the copyright holder (usually the publisher) of any reused material for their requirements and preferred format for acknowledgement. If none is provided, you may format your credit line as follows:

Reproduced with permission from [FULL CITATION]. Copyright [YEAR], [COPYRIGHT HOLDER].

You do not need permission to reuse material in the public domain, but you should still include an appropriate credit line which cites the original source.
