A transfer matrix method has been applied to study the HgTe/CdTe superlattice system by varying layer thicknesses, valence‐band offset, and strain systematically. The energy gap can be understood in terms of a midzone energy separation mainly depending on HgTe layer thickness, and a bandwidth mainly depending on CdTe layer thickness. Strain causes a simple displacement of bands by different amounts for different bands and sometimes causes an interesting band reversal. In the presence of an external magnetic field, optical transition probability and selection rules between Landau levels are obtained.
