The laser target fabrication groups in the U.K. have continued to develop techniques for the production of laser targets. Special emphasis has been put on targets for x‐ray lasers at the U. K. Central Laser Facility (CLF/RAL) and on the use of UV eximer lasers for the noncontact machining of polymer shells and planar foils. Atomic Weapons Research Establishment has concentrated largely on the production of very smooth surfaces and on the development of novel methods for the production of polymer foams. A broad array of characterization techniques are available for inspection and metrology.
