Mismatch in elastic and mechanical properties of the film–substrate interface is common when engineering alloys are hard coated. Knowledge of interface stresses due to applied external tractions can be useful in evaluating propensity for coating failure as a function of material properties and for coating design. Using plane strain modeling and displacement formulation, interface stresses are calculated and presented here as a function of elastic modulus ratios. Results are also discussed from application perspectives.
