It has been my honor to be appointed as the Editor of Biointerphases in its ninth year of existence. Biointerphases has a strong foundation in showcasing quantitative soft matter studies of interfaces relevant to the biomaterials community. Michael Grunze, founder and Editor for the first eight years, was a strong advocate for this journal of biological and biomaterial interfaces and made it the success that it is today. My goal is to continue the emphasis on high quality publications in areas that lead to a better understanding of the biointerface. Volume 9 of Biointerphases embodies a collection of articles that describe recent advances involving both soft and hard tissues. Some of the significant topics include antibacterial coatings, biologically inspired materials and systems, scaffolds for regenerative medicine, and materials with nonfouling properties, as well as methods to improve the performance of medical devices.
