High amplitude acoustic sources are used in a variety of applications of acoustics, both in air and underwater. This paper is a summary of the special session “Things that go boom: high amplitude acoustic sources” that was held at the 186th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in Ottawa, Canada. The session brought together scientists and engineers who are developing, modeling, characterizing, and applying these types of acoustic sources in a variety of disciplines.
