Special Issue: Generative and Physics-Informed Artificial Intelligence for Acoustics
Call for Papers
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA) and JASA Express Letters are calling for papers for a joint Special Issue on “Generative and Physics-Informed Artificial Intelligence for Acoustics.”
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), with breakthroughs like ChatGPT and SORA, is reshaping various fields. These breakthroughs hold significant potential for advancing the field of acoustics, encompassing areas such as audio signal processing, indoor acoustics, ultrasound applications, and underwater acoustics.
However, acoustics presents unique challenges. Sound generation, propagation, and sensing are governed by physical laws, making it an ideal fit for physics-informed AI (or AI for Science). While exciting progress has been made at the intersection of acoustics, generative AI and physics-informed AI, many critical research questions and technical challenges remain open. This emerging area offers a rich space for innovation, exploration, and impactful research.
This Special Issue invites innovative contributions that showcase how generative and physics-informed AI can address the specific challenges of acoustics. We welcome cutting-edge research that redefines the possibilities in this field.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Generative and physics-informed AI for audio processing, including tasks like synthesis, noise reduction, and speech recognition.
- Generative and physics-informed AI for modeling sound generation, propagation, and sensing.
- Generative and physics-informed AI applications in indoor acoustics, such as room simulations, sound behavior prediction, and space optimization.
- Generative and physics-informed AI for ultrasound, including medical imaging and non-destructive testing.
- Generative and physics-informed AI for underwater acoustics, including sonar signal processing, communications, and underwater soundscapes.
- Generative and physics-informed AI-based acoustic sensing for environmental monitoring, smart cities, and structural health.
- Combining generative AI and physics-informed models to tackle complex acoustic challenges.
- Emerging applications of generative and physics-informed AI in virtual reality, music technology, immersive sound, and ethical considerations.
If you have any questions about your intended paper, please email the Guest Editors.
Submission Deadline
- Deadline for manuscripts is March 2, 2026
Please note: Accepted papers will be published in the next available regular issue of the selected journal and identified as belonging to this Special Issue. After all papers from both journals have been published for the Special Issue, they will all be listed in a joint online collection on the JASA and JASA Express Letters websites.
