The topic of this paper is the determination of whether turbulent wall pressure characteristics can be modified through appropriate selection of wall material characteristics. An early investigation of flow over an elastic layer reported reductions in the turbulent wall pressure spectral levels [W. A. Von Winkle and J. E. Barger, 61st Meeting of the Acoust. Soc. Am., May 1961]. Water tunnel experiments are now being conducted to explore more fully the characteristics of turbulent wall pressure fluctuations on an elastic surface. Small flush mounted hydrophones are being used to measure both cross‐spectral and spectral properties of the wall pressure on various surfaces. Initial results on flow over a simple viscoelastic layer will be reported.
