The airborne noise level criteria specified in contracts for the construction of U.S. Navy surface boats and craft are briefly reviewed. Airborne noise levels measured aboard hydrofoil craft, planing craft, and air cushion vehicles are compared with habitability, deafness risk, and personnel communication noise criteria. The acoustical features of several small craft and the effectiveness in reducing noise levels are discussed. It was determined that airborne noise criteria that are specified in the construction of large surface ships are not practical to the smaller craft.
