Vowel duration in Montreal French (MF) is found to be directly related to the nature of the following consonant, the length of the word, the position of the vowel relative to the tonal syllable in the word, and the vowel's position relative to the tonic syllable of the breath group. Results of a factor analysis on data from seven speakers shows that most of the influences on duration are constant across class level and age, and are, in fact, quite similar to results reported for English materials [Klatt, J. Phonet. 3, 129–140 (1975)].
