When large numbers of data must be processed or when an analysis must be completed rapidly or “on line,” parallel operation is essential. An additional gain in speed is realized by handling and/or reducing the spectral information digitally. A new high‐speed analyzer has been developed. Using a digital rms detection scheme and calibrated gain controls in the filter channels, the accuracy and dynamic range limitations inherent in conventional analyzers are overcome. A 70‐dB basic dynamic range capability can be extended to an effective dynamic range of 95 dB by “prewhitening” with the calibrated gain controls. The detector has ideal characteristics in that it is totally insensitive to signal waveform. The digital approach also makes practical a wide range of integration periods. The analyzer has been designed to allow great flexibility in operation with accessory equipment. It is fully programmable and intended for use in computer‐controlled systems. In addition to its control function, a computer can serve to rapidly store data from the analyzer, determine ratings, and make comparisons.
