The requirements for high fidelity in sound reproduction are discussed in relation to high‐fidelity systems. A test method of rapidly recording the transient response of loudspeakers and 4‐terminal networks containing transducers is described and illustrated. The transient‐response curve is written automatically on the same chart as the conventional‐response curve, decibels vs frequency. Hence, the transient‐response curve appears below the conventional‐response curve in varying db difference levels as the frequency changes. Characteristics of different types of conventional loudspeakers recorded by this method are presented. Thus, a powerful technique is provided for rapidly writing quantitatively the transient‐distortion level throughout the frequency range of any loud‐speaker or electrical network capable of generating transient distortion which detracts from naturalness in the reproduction of sound.
