Two Bureau of Standards velocimeters and Nansen bottles were mounted on the bathyscaph to obtain “in situ” measurements. Data were obtained by A. B. Rechnitzer for the author at depths of 2000 and 5600 m as well as in the 29°C surface waters. Subsequently the velocimeters were taken to the Arctic and lowered from a surface vessel. Nansen bottles with reversing thermometers were tripped to match velocimeter measurements both on the bathyscaph and in the Arctic. The relationships obtained between the sound speeds, temperatures, salinities, and depths will be discussed and compared with measurements by Wilson and Del Grosso.
