Technical Committees represent fourteen different areas of acoustics in the Society. Appointments to the Technical Committees take place at the spring meeting. Members who are interested in being appointed to a technical committee should send a message to asa@acousticalsociety.org.

This annual report reviews activities of the Technical Committee on Acoustical Oceanography (TCAO) for the 183rd and 184th meetings of Acoustical Society of America (ASA) in Nashville, Tennessee, and in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. John Colosi graciously filled in as the TCAO chair at the Nashville meeting, as the newly elected chair (and author of this report) remained at home caring for a brand-new baby. I hope to visit the country music capital of the world another time.

Between the two meetings we had several excellent and timely special sessions organized by our members. Topics at Nashville were (1) Acoustical Remote Sensing, Navigation, and Passive Monitoring in the Polar Ocean, (2) Acoustical Sensing of Ocean Turbulence, Mixing, and Stratification, and (3) Shelfbreak Acoustics. In Chicago a special memorial session for Jeffrey A. Nystuen was held, with heartfelt and moving talks given by colleagues, former students, friends, and fellow acoustical oceanographers. The session was broadcast live, allowing family members and guests outside the Acoustical Society to attend virtually and learn more about Jeff's scientific work. Dr. Nystuen's obituary is found in Volume 17, Issue 1 of Acoustics Today.

Over the year there were also several awards to be celebrated. At the Nashville meeting we acknowledged AO founding father and Michael Buckingham with the society's Gold medal, awarded to an “individual whose contributions to the field of acoustics and to the Acoustical Society have been unusually distinguished.” Michael's citation reads “for theoretical and experimental contributions to ocean acoustics and for service to the Society.” Following along at the Chicago meeting, AO member Dr. Kathleen Wage was awarded the Rossing Prize in Acoustics Education. Her prize lecture was entitled “DJ Prof: Reflections on Teaching” and her excellent series of videos on signal processing can be found at www.youtube.com/@ProfKathleenWage. The AOTC Medwin Prize was awarded to David Barclay, with the citation “for contributions to the fundamental understanding of ocean ambient sound.” The prize lecture was entitled “Passive acoustic exploration of the ocean.”

The AO students also shone during this past year with the top two exemplary papers receiving an award at each meeting. The first-place prize was awarded to Emmanuelle Cook for her talk “Determining the speed dependent source level of a snowmobile traveling on sea-ice” and second place to Natalie Kukshtel for her talk “Sound propagation measurements using an autonomous underwater vehicle acoustic array in the New England Shelf Break Acoustics network” at the Nashville meeting. In Chicago, Ryan Saenger won with “Mid-frequency acoustic localization of breaking waves” and second place was awarded to Rachel Kahn for “Broadband attenuation-based measurements of bubble size distributions.” The exceedingly narrow point spread between the winning talks and the many other wonderful student presentations, makes it difficult to distinguish signal from noise, so we thank our excellent student members and our hard-working judges.

This year also saw the establishment of two new prizes. The TC Acoustical Oceanography Student Travel Award (also known as The Eileen and Herman Medwin Award), was awarded for the first time to support student attendance at ASA meetings. Rachel Kahn was the inaugural recipient at the Chicago meeting. The Daoma and Murray Strasberg fellowship was also launched, providing financial support for graduate students working in the area of ocean acoustics. The award, in memory of prolific mystery, history, and romance novelist Daoma and her acoustical physicist husband Murray, was awarded for the first time in 2023 and is administered by the TCs of Acoustical Oceanography, Underwater Acoustics, Physical Acoustics, Structural Acoustics and Vibration, and Signal Processing. The inaugural winner will be formally announced at the Fall 2023 meeting.

At our TC meetings, members reported on select activities outside the ASA. Dr. Bruce Howe described an effort to support the inclusion of hydrophones in The Science Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunications (SMART) Subsea Cables initiative led by the World Meteorological Organization, UNESCO and the UN International Telecommunications Union. Drs. Jen Miksis-Olds and Preston Wilson described their participation in the National Academies committee on Ocean Acoustics Education and Expertise.

Thanks to all members of the TC for welcoming me as the new chair. I appreciate all the efforts put towards creating an energetic and dynamic atmosphere in AO and the ASA, and in making TCAO the scientific center of ocean sensing and monitoring with sound. We look forward to a productive and exciting year ahead.

Computational Acoustics completed its first full year as a Technical Committee, after being promoted from a Technical Specialty Group at the May 2022 meeting in Denver. The CA TC provides a forum for researchers interested in numerical methods, optimization of calculations, benchmarking, and practical application of computational models. Young ASA members and industry are particularly strongly represented on the CA TC.

As a TC, Computational Acoustics now has a full complement of committee representatives: Amanda Hanford for the Technical Program Organization Meeting, Laura Brill for the ASA Standards Committee, Ralph Muehleisen for the Medals and Awards Committee, and Vladimir Ostashev for the Membership Committee. Pravinkumar Ghodake is the Student Representative. Michael Vorländer serves as the CA liaison to the Committee on Industry and Practitioners. Kuangcheng Wu is the JASA Coordinating Editor for CA. My three-year term as the CA TC (previously TSG) chair will conclude with the Ottawa meeting in Spring 2024. It's been a great ride, but it is time to find someone else who can push computational acoustics in ASA forward!

CA was the primary sponsor for four special sessions at the Fall 2022 meeting in Nashville: “Physics-Informed Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning for Acoustics,” which was organized by Brandon Lee, Amanda Hanford, and Matthew Blevins, “Numerical Approaches for Complex Media and Geometries” by Z. Charlie Zheng and Keith Wilson, “Learning and Stochastic Modeling in Computational Acoustics” by Pierre Lermusiaux, Wael Ali, and Aaron Charous, and “Finite Difference Time Domain Methods Across Acoustics” by Jennifer Cooper, Michelle Swearingen, and Subha Maruvada.

Five special sessions (a new record for CA!) were sponsored at the Spring 2023 meeting in Chicago: “Real-Time Computing” by Michael Vorländer and Jonas Braasch, “Computational Methods for Modeling Acoustic Damping” by Kuangcheng Wu and Sue Sung, “Wind Acoustics” by Gregory Lyons and Keith Wilson, “Boundary conditions Across Acoustics” by Jennifer Cooper and Michelle Swearingen, and “Showcases of HPC Across Acoustics” by Kuangcheng Wu and Ralph Muehleisen.

CA also held its Early Career Presenter award competition at the Nashville and Denver meeting. Three awards of up to $250 are made. The winners from the Nashville meeting were Maia Gatlin, Aaron Charous, and Meydan Kaplan; for the Chicago meeting, Jacob Honer, Daniele Mirabilii, and Philipp Schäfer took the prizes. We'd like to thank all of the students who participated. The consistently outstanding quality of the presentations made the judges' decisions especially difficult!

Please join us at one of our upcoming TC open meetings in Sydney and Ottawa. The CA TC welcomes participation from all members of the ASA interested in computational acoustics. In particular, we are eager for new ideas on special sessions, collaborative code development and repositories, and benchmarking and validation.

This report summarizes the activities of Musical Acoustics Technical Committee (TCMU) from July 2022 through June 2023, including the ASA meetings in Nashville (Fall 2022) and Chicago (Spring 2023).

At the 183rd meeting of the ASA in Nashville, TCMU organized two general topics sessions and one special session on Modeling and Simulation of Physical Effects in Sound Reproduction, organized by Preston Wilson and Mark Rau. We also co-sponsored a session on Additive Manufacturing in Acoustics. None of these were hybrid sessions. The Technical Program Organizers representing TCMU were Taffeta Elliott and Kurt Hoffmann.

Scott Hawley organized a well-attended technical tour of the music production facilities at Belmont University. The high points were a demonstration of the new Dolby Atmos surround sound system and a close-up look at a Foley sound effect studio! Scott also organized a special session on Signal Processing for Musical Audio Production (sponsored by Signal Processing).

First place in the best student paper competition was awarded to Makayle Kellison (Rollins College); second place was awarded to Samuel Bellows (BYU).

The open meeting of the technical committee had 20 in-person attendees and 10 attending remotely via Zoom. Significant outcomes of the meeting include

  • A vote to implement an online form for judging the Best Student Paper award in Musical Acoustics—Andy Piacsek created the form in Qualtrics, adapted from an existing form used by Animal Bioacoustics, prior to the Chicago meeting

  • Two attendees with Associate Member status filled out the form to upgrade to Full Member status (during the meeting!)

At the 184th ASA meeting in Chicago, TCMU sponsored two general and three special sessions:

  • Acoustics of Stringed Instruments, organized by Montserrat Pàmies-Vilà and Vasileios Chatziioannou

  • Acoustics of Percussion Instruments, organized by Andrew Morrison and Colin Malloy

  • Music Synthesis Techniques Applied to Sound Design and Sonification, organized by Jill Linz (hybrid session)

Two of these special sessions had an associated musical performance: the harp duo Two Columns (Julie Spring and Ellie Kirk) performed an enchanting and eclectic program; a steel pan band from Joliet Junior College gave a lively performance on these instruments developed in the Caribbean. The Technical Program Organizers representing TCMU for this meeting were Kurt Hoffmann and Stephen Tufte.

The new online form for evaluating student presentations was widely used. A QR code linking to the form was available for attendees to scan. In the future, this code will be sent to nominated students to include in their presentation.

There were 20 in-person attendees at the open TC meeting and 10 who participated via Zoom. There was a robust discussion about the merits and challenges of hybrid sessions. The hybrid Music Synthesis session went reasonably smoothly, thanks to the help of volunteers from the audience who were familiar with navigating between Zoom and PowerPoint on a Windows platform. Suggestions for future hybrid meetings included designating a few rooms for hybrid sessions that have appropriate technology and dedicated staff. Approximately 25% of TC members plan to attend the Sydney meeting. Several ideas for new types of sessions were proposed for the all-virtual meeting in 2024, including an interactive workshop on simulations, demonstrations of telematic music technology, live tours of labs and/or instrument workshops, and an outreach session aimed at K-12.

Committee member roles:

Jonas Braasch was elected to serve as Chair of TCMU following the conclusion of Andy Piacsek's term after the Chicago meeting. May Pik Yu Chan will replace Colin Malloy as the Student Council representative following the Sydney meeting. Andrew Morrison is the new (as of 2022) representative to the Membership Committee and Murray Campbell was recently appointed to serve on the Medals and Awards Committee. TCMU members who are Associate Editors for JASA include Vasileios Chatziioannou, Psyche Loui, Andrew Morrison, and Tamara Smyth; Associate Editors for JASA-EL include Vasileios Chatziioannou and Murray Campbell. Andrew Morrison maintains the TCMU website (http://tcmuasa.org/), which includes links to future meetings, minutes of previous TCMU meetings, annual reports, student paper award winners, and useful links to teaching websites and musical acousticians.

This report covers the activities of the Technical Committee on Psychological and Physiological Acoustics (P&P) from May 2022 through May 2023, which includes the 183rd meeting in Nashville TN (Dec 2022) and the 184th meeting in Chicago IL (May 2023).

The Fall meeting in Nashville was on the smaller side for P&P, as is usual given our emphasis on Spring meetings. The P&P technical program featured two podium sessions, two poster sessions, and several co-sponsored sessions with other technical committees. At the Awards Ceremony we celebrated our newest Fellow Lina Reiss (“For studies of combined electric and acoustic hearing”). The Open Meeting of the P&P technical committee was attended by around 30 people in-person.

The Spring meeting in Chicago had a busy P&P technical program that included four podium sessions, three poster sessions, and several co-sponsored sessions. Erick Gallun gave a wonderful keynote lecture titled “Clinical research in acoustics: Reflections on a journey from bench to bedside and back again.” Bertrand Delgutte was awarded the 2022 William and Christine Hartmann Prize in Auditory Neuroscience and had a full and lively audience for his lecture titled “In search of the missing resolved harmonics: Neural and behavioral studies of pitch discrimination.” At the Awards Ceremony we also celebrated our newest Fellows John Galvin III (“For research into speech and music perception with cochlear implants”) and Sarah Verhulst (“For contributions to computational modeling of the normal and impaired auditory system”). We dedicated one of the poster sessions to candidates for the Best Student Paper Award. This session was a great success, and the winners were Samantha Hauser and Rebecca Higgins. Congratulations to them both! The Open Meeting of the P&P technical committee was hybrid and was attended by around 100 people in total. At this meeting we thanked three members who ended their terms on the technical committee (Magda Wojtczak, Pavel Zahorik, Yi Shen) and welcomed in an incredible 34 new members! I am excited about our new volunteer structure, which will promote the engagement of active and enthusiastic members from different career stages.

Greg Ellis was the Technical Program Organizer for both of these meetings and we are grateful for his hard work! P&P has many special sessions planned for the upcoming meetings in Sydney, Australia (Dec 2023) and Ottawa, Canada (May 2024), and some creative ideas are brewing for the fully virtual meeting happening in the Fall of 2024.

Outside of meetings, 2022–2023 saw a continuation of the P&P Virtual Journal Club, which gives members a chance to meet informally once a month and discuss a current paper from JASA with the author. Thank you to the organizers (especially Chris Conroy) as well as authors and attendees for continuing to make this event fun and engaging. We have many P&P members serving on ASA committees and we are grateful to them all. Some new appointments include Barb Shinn-Cunningham (President Elect), Laurel Carney (Medals and Awards Committee), Matt Goupell (Membership Committee), Pavel Zahorik (Meetings Committee), Skyler Jennings (Books Committee), and Mathias Dietz (Hartmann Prize Committee). Thanks also to our new coordinating editor for JASA, Emily Buss, and all of the associate editors for JASA, JASA-EL, and POMA. On a sad note, the P&P community lost a number of cherished colleagues over the past year, including Lou Braida, Dave Green, Nelson Kiang, and Christian Füllgrabe. Their influence on our field was enormous and they will continue to inspire us.

Finally, as my three-year term has come to an end, I want to congratulate and welcome the new P&P Chair Chris Stecker. It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know so many P&P members better during my term. Thanks for your support and friendship!

The Technical Committee on Signal Processing in Acoustics (TCSP) welcomed yet another high impact (factor) year. We continue to provide a diverse set of special sessions addressing the unique signal processing challenges faced in acoustics.

At the fall 2022 meeting held in Nashville we had three special sessions. “Dispersive Wave Signal Processing,” was chaired by Zoi-Heleni Michalopoulou and Julien Bonnel with over 17 contributions with both a morning and afternoon session. “Active Control of Sound and Vibration,” was chaired by Yangfan Lui and Jordan Cheer and had 8 presentations about theories, algorithms, practical applications and technology commercialization related therein. “Signal Processing for Musical Audio Production,” was led by Scott Hawley which has 6 amazing talks. Personally, I was fascinated by completely AI generated music as well as music sound engineering. Our Technical Program organizers were Trevor Jerome and Kay Gemba.

We began the spring 2023 meeting in Chicago with a two-part session about “Acoustical Imaging, Reconstruction, and Localization.” Yangfan Liu and Efren Grande had 20 invited and contributed talks. Next the “Feature Extraction, Dimensionality Reduction, and Learning in Ocean Acoustics,” was organized by Jim Preisig, Andy Singer, and Grant Deane. It had over 15 powerful afternoon talks. Next came one of my favorite new session formats: “My Favorite Signal Processing Homework Problems.” With 20 talks, John Buck and Kathleen Wage lead a fun two-part discussion about our favorite problem to either give or get. Once again our Technical Program organizer was Trevor Jerome.

We again thank Trevor again for organizing our best student paper awards which is our chance to recognize outstanding student achievement. At Nashville first and second place were, respectively, taken by Nick Joslyn for their talk entitled “Super-Resolution, Time-Reversal Focusing using Path-Diverting Scatterers,” and Daniel Lopes for “Estimation and Interpretation of Multipath Channel Activity using Braiding Techniques.” At the Chicago meeting the first and second place awards were respectively awarded to William Frost Jenkins for “Acoustic Source Localization using Bayesian Optimization with a Gaussian Process Surrogate Model,” and to You Zhang for “Grid-Agnostic Personalized Head-Related Transfer Function Modeling with Neural Fields.”

The TCSP has sponsored an International Student Challenge problem in 2023. Pay close attention to Acoustics Today for the problem and solution requirements. Submissions will be due later this year. Brian Ferguson, Lee Culver, and Kai Gemba will manage the competition.

Thanks to Sam Bellows, our Student Representative, for all of his hard work this is his last few meetings. Congratulations to Raymond Plasse who is our incoming Student Representative.

John Buck, Univ. of Mass. Dartmouth serves as the TCSP representative to the Membership Committee and as our representative to the Education in Acoustics Committee. Peter Gerstoft of Scripps Institution of Oceanography who serves as representative to the Medals and Awards Committee. Natalia Sidorovskaia of the Univ. of Louisiana Lafayette serves as TCSP representative to the ASA Committee on Standards. Trevor Jerome, NSWC Carderock also serves us on Public Policy. Ryan Harne of Penn State maintains the TCSP website and the site is located at http://tcspasa.org. A talented and conscientious group of associate editors serves the TCSP and we are immensely grateful for their patience and care this year. We thank the following Associate Editors for the JASA in Signal Processing, Jianlong Li, Zoi-Heleni Michalopoulou, Karim Sabra, Kay Gemba, Haiqiang Niu, Julian de Rosny, Paul J. Gendron, and Efren Fernandez-Grande. Peter Gerstoft serves as our coordinating editor to JASA. Our JASA-EL Associate Editors are John Buck, David Swanson, and Wen Xu. Our POMA Associate Editors was Ryan Harne. Last, a sincere and grateful thank you to anyone I may have missed as so many wonderful members of our TC contribute to its success.

We look forward to meeting in person again at our fall 2023 meeting in Sydney, Australia. We will meet locally in the morning to have our telepresence at our regular time. TCSP will continue to lead scientific efforts to advance the theory and methods of inference from ever-increasing volumes of acoustic observations.

This report summarizes the activities of the Structural Acoustics and Vibrations Technical Committee (SAVTC) during the 183rd Meeting in Nashville, TN (Fall 2022) through the 184th Meeting in Chicago, IL (Spring 2023).

The 183rd ASA in Nashville, TN took place 5–9 Dec, 2022. SAVTC had 5 special and one contributed session.

  • Tunable Active Metamaterials: Ganesh Patil, Ben Goldsberry, and Betsy Smith

  • Additive Manufacturing: Christina Naify, Michael Haberman, Jim Cottingham, and John Granzow (Musical)

  • Surrogate and Reduced-Order Modeling for Structural Acoustics Applications: Stephanie Konarski and Anthony Bonomo, Ali Kanj

  • Acoustic Metamaterials: Christina Naify, Alexey Titovich, and Bogdan Popa

  • Fluid Structure Interaction: Ben Goldsberry and Micah Shepard

  • (Contributed) Analysis of Vibratory Systems: Stephanie Konarski and Thomas Bowling

The student paper competition was evaluated via a shared QR code and organized by Benjamin Shafer, and Trevor Jerome with a total of 16 student submissions. The session on Additive Manufacturing featured an invited speaker who presented her studies on 3D printing a violin (Mary-Elizabeth Brown). This talk was featured in a press conference given by the ASA Media team and the story was picked up by over 30 news outlets, both domestic and international. The Additive Manufacturing session also featured an invited talk by the winner of the Additive Manufacturing and Acoustics Student Challenge problem, Lara Diaz-Garcia on her submission Novel Biomimetic Acoustic Sensors Inspired by Insect Hearing. A summary of the results of that competition is available in the Winter 2022 edition of Acoustics Today.

At the TC meeting Tuesday evening, Betsy Smith served as technical assistant during the TC meeting, running the zoom to facilitate the hybrid TC meeting. The TC meeting had 44 attendees in person and 11 people via Zoom. Procedures for fellowship nominations were reviewed again as SAV has a limited fellow-pool from which to draw committee memberships. The POMA student competition was reviewed as a way to increase POMA submissions and provide opportunities for students to hone writing skills. The Trent-Crede Metal was discussed as it is likely that SAV will have the opportunity to nominate someone in the near future. SAV has continued to grow with 75 current members. Sessions were finalized for the Sydney meeting in fall 2023 and initial sessions were proposed for the Ottawa meeting in spring 2024.

The winners of the student competition were:

1st Place, Daniel Giraldo Guzman, Topology Optimization Design of Elastodynamic Metasurfaces Based on Resonance Gaps and Antiresonance Matching;

2nd Place, A. J. Lawrence, Modular Speaker Design Enabled by Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing.

The 184th ASA in Chicago, IL took place 8–12 May, 2023. SAVTC had 5 special sessions and 1 contributed session:

  • Acoustic Metamaterials: Christina Naify, Alexey Titovich, Bogdan Popa, and Brittany Wojciechowski

  • Historical Perspectives in Structural Acoustics: Alexey Titovich, K. C. Wu, and A. J. Lawrence

    • * Chosen as the ONE session in Chicago to be hybrid.

  • Real World Case Studies for Damping: Ben Shafer and Bob Koch and Saranchana Keattitorn

  • Acoustic Excitation of Structures: Brian Anderson and Trevor Jerome and Ian Bacon

  • Tutorial on Structural Acoustics: Stephanie Konarski and Anthony Bonomo

  • (Contributed) General Topics in Structural Acoustics: Anthony Bonomo, Hubert Hall

  • The student paper competition was evaluated via a shared QR code and organized by Trevor Jerome with a total of 19 student submissions.

The TC meeting had 49 attendees in person and 9 people via Zoom. SAV TC meeting was moved to Wed evening for the first time to de-conflicted schedule-wise with Physical Acoustics TC, whose meetings were also Tuesday evening. Sessions were finalized for the Ottawa meeting in spring 2024 and initial sessions proposed for the virtual meeting in fall 2024. SAV congratulated member Bogdan Popa for being elected Fellow of the Society. The room size for SAV at this meeting was discussed, specifically that the size of the room was very small compared to other sessions.

The TC meeting schedule for Sydney (fall 2023) was discussed. Another topic of discussion included the fall 2024 virtual meeting. Concerns were raised about the ability to socialize and network virtually and ideas were discussed to take advantage of the virtual aspect of the meeting including live demos or lab tours. One such idea was presented to hold a special SAV session for the student paper winners from the last 2 years to present their work. Initial session ideas were also discussed for the meeting in New Orleans in spring 2025. Finally, a presentation was given by S. Hales Swift and Matthew Guild on an idea to start a new Interdisciplinary Technical Group on Phononics and Acoustic Metamaterials. Membership for SAV was 87 at the time of this meeting.

The student competition resulted in a tie:

  • 1st Place, Chirag Gokani, Source-Driven Homogenization Theory for Electro-Momentum Coupled Scatterers

  • 1st Place, Akash Nivarthi, Mechanical Characterization of Additively Manufactured Polymers using Ultrasonic Nondestructive Testing

Thank you to all who have volunteered including but not limited to:

  • A. J. Lawrence and Ian Bacon (Student Council)

  • Karl Grosh (Medals and Awards)

  • Robert Koch (ASACOS)

  • Kuancheng Wu (Membership Committee)

  • Ryan Harne/Jason Smoker (SAVTC Web Page)

  • Andrew Barnard (Education in Acoustics Committee)

  • Ben Shafer, Trevor Jerome (Student Paper Competition)

  • Anthony Bonomo, Stephanie Konarski (Technical Program Organizers)

  • Nicole Kessissoglou (Coordinating Editor), Li Cheng, Laurent Maxit, Marcel C. Remillieux, Franck Sgard (JASA Associate Editors for SAV)

  • Greg McDaniel (JASA Express Letters Associate Editor for SAV)

  • Micah Shepherd (POAM Editor for SAV)

  • All session chairs.

Your time and effort help make our committee successful and I look forward to continue to grow the committee and expand outreach over the next year.
