In 2016, the Acoustic Group was asked to assist the IMAX cinema in London with the aim of improving the emissive experience of listening to the streamed New York Metropolitan Opera. IMAX cinemas are designed and constructed to meet specific standards they were not built to reproduce an operatic experience. The IMAX cinema at London Waterloo was built in 1999 before streaming was invented; as such it was optimized for the IMAX film format only. Room acoustic measurements were taken in the room in accordance to ISO 3382-1 so that a CATT-Acoustics model of the auditorium could be calibrated. Auralization was then used in the model to create a more immersive operatic experience. A questionnaire was then created so that the settings established from the auralization could be subjectively tested using a two minute clip of Wagner. The paper will report on the results from three of the settings for 15 listeners in the IMAX cinema.
