One of the principal differences between tomographic image reconstruction with acoustic and radiographic data is that sound waves, unlike x‐radiation, do not generally travel along straight line ray paths in nonhomogeneous media. In this work, a technique for ray tracing in nonhomogeneous media (both isotropic and anisotropic) is developed. This approach is based upon Fermat’s principle and can be readily incorporated into tomographic reconstruction algorithms. The effect of ray bending on the accuracy of acoustic tomograms is investigated.
