The degradation of broadband pulses due to atmospheric absorption was examined as a potential explanation for flexible echolocation behavior. It was found that absorption can explain flexible echolocation behavior in FM/CF bats but not in CF/FM bats. The effects of absorption on target detection and the potential importance to bats of other atmospheric propagation effects are examined and discussed.
