Mellen’s paper [’’The thermal‐noise limit in detection of underwater acoustic signals,’’ J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 24 478–480 (1952)] on the thermal‐noise limit of a hydrophone is reviewed to document some minor corrections and to clarify a point concerning the free field voltage sensitivity of a transducer. Some elaboration of details in portions of the derivation is also made.
