A dimensional analysis of the equations of continuity, momentum, and energy is performed which yields independent dimensionless parameters for use in presenting monochromatic acoustical data. These parameters include the heat capacity ratio γ and the Prandtl number cpμ/k of the material through which the sound is transmitted, an acoustical Reynolds number ρL2ω/μ, and the dimensionless group Lω/c. To illustrate the use of these parameters, the classical Kirchhoff–Helmholtz formulae for sound propagation through gases contained in tubes have been presented in dimensionless form.
