A large−amplitude pulsed ultrasonic wave at 30 MHz in fused silica is shown to generate second harmonics out of phase with those generated by the same ultrasonic wave in copper. This phase difference, interpreted as evidence of the approach of a backward sawtooth in fused silica, results from the fact that C111 is positive. In copper C111 is negative.
