It is suggested that Reissner's membrane normally has a slight curvature toward the basilar membrane. With the coiling of the cochlea, it is then a thin shell of positive curvature which has a behavior consistent with the results and observations of Békésy. The membrane is not “slack” but remains stable in the curved configuration during physiological stimulation.
