Recent measurements on basilar membrane mechanical tuning reveal very fast high‐frequency cut‐offs, approaching those of neural tuning curves. The guinea pig's first turn does not seem to exhibit much nonlinearity in contrast to that found in the squirrel monkey, and the phase data are also different. This may be a place or a species variation. A simple model of a nonlinear resonant system was constructed, and it exhibits many of the properties ascribed to the basilar membrane.
