As a possible means of improving signal‐to‐noise ratios in acoustic systems which must function in hostile environments, direct mechanical parametric amplification schemes have been investigated. Experimental amplifiers have been constructed and are described. A typical single‐stage amplifier has a gain of 10 dB over a 450‐Hz bandwidth.
