A coupled theory for the vibration analysis of piezoelectric shells of revolution is presented, which satisfies all electrostatic and elasticity equations within the limits of a shell theory. As an illustrative example, the free vibration characteristics of a hollow cylinder made of ferroelectric ceramic PZT‐4 are calculated in detail. Resonant frequencies are given as a function of the length of the cylinder. The relations of the electrical admittance and the electromechnical coupling with the frequency are shown. The comparison of these results to those of uncoupled theories, given previously, is discussed.
