Pressure‐amplitude losses for a plane wave impinging on a reference depth are calculated for different depth positions in a medium with a variable index of refraction. These losses, calculated for several grazing angles, are compared with transmission coefficients calculated using a simple Rayleigh analysis considering only two semiinfinite extents of different velocity fluids. The method of determining an expression for the velocity profile is discussed, along with the details of the transmission coefficient calculation.
