This paper considers the reactive component, as distinct from the resistive or energy‐radiating component, of the free‐field acoustic load on a panel vibrating in an infinite baffle. A finite element technique is used to evaluate the integrals numerically for a simply supported panel vibrating in its fundamental mode. Results have been obtained for panel aspect ratios between 0.1 and 1.0 and for acoustic‐wavelength/plate‐length ratios between 1.5 and ∞. For a specific panel, it is shown that this component of the radiation load on the panel reduces the fundamental natural frequency by 1.8%. For lighter panels, this effect is proportionately increased.
