A new method is presented for predicting approximately the response in complex, lightly damped, disordered linear systems to transient or steady‐state disturbances when the frequency content of the disturbance is in a band involving high natural frequencies of the undamped system. The method consists of constructing sequences of coupled oscillators that derive from the system description by minimizing a mean‐frequency weighted function of the coordinates subject to suitable constraints.
