The variable reflectance surface consists of a movable frame and a base plate. The frame carries a series of equidistant black (or white) aluminum stripes; the base plate has a pattern of black and white stripes with the same spacing as the stripes. The reflectivity of the device can be varied by a factor of 10, depending on the location of the movable stripes with respect to the fixed stripes. The position of the frame is controlled by a micrometer screw, giving excellent reproducibility of the reflectivity.
