For the Helmholtz configuration in free space see, e.g., W. T. Scott, Physics and Electricity of Magnetism (Wiley, New York, 1958), pp. 323–324. where B is the field in gauss, n and the number of turns per coil, I the current in amperes and a the radius of the coils in centimeters.

This value of the field is greater than the calculated (free space) value because of the permeability of the pole faces to which the coils are mounted.
12.
A more rapid sweep could have been used except that distortion of the lines due to the 200 μsec time constant of the instrument would have occurred.
13.
The field at the shim is greater than at the center of the pole face; therefore, the field set with the field controller must be increased to in order to produce at the sample.
