A new method for measuring the cross sectional size of the near anode arc column on a relative scale for a moving arc column makes use of potential and conductance probes. The method permits one to determine the shape of dc arc columns under cross flow conditions and the variation of the arc cross section within the viscous boundary layer of an anode.
