We are indebted to Dr. W. V. Loebenstein, National Bureau of Standards, Washington, D.C., for the research which led to the choice of ferric hydroxide and for the preparation of the first sample used in our tests.

For comparison of the various catalysts, conversion to 90% para‐hydrogen was chosen in preference to more complete conversion because this made possible a saving in time without any loss of significance of the results. A series of flow rates which resulted in conversions bracketing 90% para were set up and the data were then plotted to obtain the 90% intercept.
