The problem considered is that of measuring the fast neutron tissue dose. A special proportional counter has been designed whose response to collimated neutrons is such that the number of counts produced is approximately proportional to dose, when the neutron energy is between 0.2 Mev and 10 Mev. The response has been tested experimentally with monoergic neutrons of various energies between 365 kev and 5.2 Mev and at 14 Mev and is in good agreement with the dose curve.

The neutron sources with energies between 365 kev and 1.1 Mev were obtained at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory by means of the H3(P, n)He3 reaction using the van de Graaf accelerator. Other sources available at Los Alamos were the H2(d, n)He3 reaction at 2.5‐Mev neutron energy and the H3(d, n)He4 reaction giving 14‐Mev neutrons, both using the Cockcroft‐Walton machine. The energies near 5 Mev were obtained at the Carnegie Institute of Washington by means of the van de Graaf accelerator and the H2(d, n)He3 reaction.
