In memory of the Academician: Sergey Leonidovich Gnatchenko (1947–2020)

The Editorial Board and the editorial staff of the journal Low Temperature Physics deeply mourn over the departure from the life of Sergey Leonidovich Gnatchenko, Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Director of the B. Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in science and technology, holder of the Order of Merit III degree, laureate of the of the prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Polish Academy of Sciences, Professor, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics.

S.L. Gnatchenko is an outstanding scientist, a talented organizer, a wonderful experimental physicist. His research in the field of optical and magnetic properties of complex systems led to a number of discoveries of new magneto-optical effects. As a talented organizer, Sergey Leonidovich led the Institute through difficult years for the National Academy of Sciences, keeping in it a creative atmosphere thanks to which Institute took one of the leading positions in the rating of scientific institutions of Ukraine.

As the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Low Temperature Physics S.L. Gnatchenko, following the traditions laid down by his predecessors, B.I. Verkin and V.V. Eremenko, Academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, did everything to make the Journal a widely cited international publication: over the years, the impact factor of the journal has grown by almost a third.

The Editorial Board and the editorial staff of Low Temperature Physics express their sincere condolences to the colleagues, relatives and friends of Sergei Leonidovich. Members of the Editorial Board and editorial staff of Low Temperature Physics together with the Institute co-workers will remember Sergey Leonidovich Gnatchenko as an outstanding scientist, talented leader and a wonderful person.
